M5.0 Earthquake Strikes Fiji Region

M5.0 Earthquake Strikes Fiji Region
Fiji Region — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the Fiji region Tuesday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
What happened:
The quake hit at 6:32 PM Central Time on Tuesday, November 3. It was centered in the Fiji region of the South Pacific, about 549 kilometers below the surface, making it a very deep earthquake. Deep quakes of this kind usually lose much of their strength before reaching the surface.
Impacts:
The USGS reports no tsunami threat from this earthquake. No felt reports or damage reports were listed at the time of this report. Because of its great depth, shaking at the surface was expected to be limited.
What to do:
- Drop, cover, and hold on during shaking, and stay put until it stops.
- After a quake, check for hazards such as fallen objects, broken glass, and gas smells.
- Stay alert for aftershocks, which can follow a larger quake.
- If you are near the coast and feel strong shaking, move to higher ground right away.
