Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Southeastern Arizona Through 2:00 PM

Breaking news alert for a severe thunderstorm in Arizona.

UPDATE — Wednesday, October 21, 3:32 PM CT: the National Weather Service says two severe thunderstorms are now 5 and 13 miles east of San Manuel, moving north at 45 mph, still packing 60 mph gusts and quarter-size hail. Mammoth, San Manuel, Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness, and Klondyke are in the path.

Southeastern Arizona — A severe thunderstorm is rolling north through the desert country east of Tucson, and the National Weather Service has placed parts of four southeastern Arizona counties under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning through 2:00 PM Mountain time.

What is happening: Radar tracked the storm at 1:09 PM Mountain time, sitting about 15 miles northeast of Saguaro National Park East and moving north at 45 miles per hour. The warning covers northwestern Cochise County, southwestern Graham County, northeastern Pima County, and southeastern Pinal County — including Mammoth, San Manuel, Redington, Cascabel, Klondyke, and the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness, plus Route 77 between mile markers 111 and 118.

Local impacts: The storm is packing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Hail this size dents vehicles and strips siding; winds that strong can peel shingles and bring down trees and power lines.

What to do:

- Get inside a well-built structure now and stay there until the storm passes.

- Stay away from windows — hail and wind-blown debris can shatter glass.

- If you are driving on Route 77, pull fully off the road and wait it out.

- Bring pets indoors and secure anything loose outside that the wind could throw around.
