M5.0 Earthquake Strikes Near Sarangani, Philippines

Sarangani, Philippines — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck in the waters southeast of the Philippines early Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
What happened:
The quake hit at 1:40 a.m. Central Time on Wednesday, November 4. Its center was about 207 kilometers east-southeast of Sarangani, in the southern Philippines, at a depth of about 49 kilometers below the surface. A quake at that depth is considered moderately deep, which often limits shaking at the surface compared with a shallower quake of the same size.
Impacts:
No damage reports were available in the first hour after the quake, and no felt reports had been filed with the Geological Survey. The agency issued no tsunami warning for this event. The quake struck offshore, well away from the nearest towns, and no tsunami threat was reported.
What to do:
- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table, and hold on until the shaking stops.
- Stay away from windows, heavy furniture, and anything that could fall.
- After shaking stops, check for hazards such as broken glass, gas leaks, and damaged power lines before moving around.
- Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a quake of this size in the hours and days ahead.
- If you are near the coast and feel strong shaking, move to higher ground right away as a precaution.
